New insights on manipulating the material removal characteristics of Jet-Electrochemical machining through nozzle design

Abstract Jet-Electrochemical machining (Jet-ECM) is a novel variation of traditional electrochemical in which electrically conductive material removed through anodic dissolution by means fine jet electrolyte. In this study, the effect nozzle geometry on removal characteristics are investigated physical experiments performed Jet-ECM system under development at university Manchester. A total 8 nozzles with holes encompassing converging, diverging and rounded features studied flow rates between 0.125 0.225 l/min. The results show that hole has significant machined profile produced due to variations velocity, pressure, electric current distribution converging providing an increased depth cut than symmetrical cylindrical channel up 9.7%. 2D Star CCM+ simulation also proposed, numerical developed compared experimental ones investigate feasibility using develop future designs. simulated good comparison results, however, model needs developing improve process repeatability for use design.
